Attention News Editors:
TORONTO, May 16 /CNW/ - Two nurses from The Hospital for Sick Children
were discharged on all criminal charges arising from the death of Lisa Shore,
which occurred at the hospital in 1998.
"It's a day of mixed emotions. Although justice has been done, and no one
individual was found at fault, we remain deeply saddened for the Shore family
and the loss of their child," says Mary Jo Haddad, Vice President, Child
Health Services and Chief Nurse Executive at The Hospital for Sick Children.
"Admittedly, there were systemic problems at the time that contributed to this
sad event. The hospital cooperated fully with the police investigation and
with Crown Counsel. However, the forum to address these problems is not in a
criminal court, but rather through the inquest process and a review by the
appropriate professional college."
A Coroner's inquest into the death of Lisa Shore resulted in several
recommendations that have since been implemented by The Hospital for Sick
Children.
